Dr. Alvin Lewis

Dr. Alvin Lewis
Dr. Alvin Lewis was born and reared in Chicago, IL. He has also lived in Kansas, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Currently, he is a resident of Jackson (Brookleigh), MS,  along with his wife, Dr. Juanita Lewis, Ph.D. previously of New Orleans, LA.  They have three loving adult children (Alvin Vaughn, Lydia Janese, Lystrelle Daneen).

Pastor Lewis earned his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. degrees from Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS and a Master of Divinity from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois. He has also studied at other institutions of higher education in several other states.

Dr. Lewis has served churches as pastor in Wisconsin, Kansas and  Mississippi. Dr. Lewis served as National Director of Adult and Family Life Education-Leadership Development for the National Board of Christian Education of the Church of God, Anderson, Indiana for 15 years. In addition he served as Administrator and Minister of Pastoral Care at Vernon Park Church of God, Chicago, Illinois for 7 years.  From 1989 to 1992 he was the Executive Director and of the National Association of the Church of God, West Middlesex, PA.

Dr. Lewis was employed as instructor and  assistant professor at Kansas State University (Manhaatan, KS), Emporia State University (Emporia, KS), He has also served as instructor or consultant to the following institutions of higher education:  Anderson University, School of Theology, (Anderson, IN),  Mid-America Bible College (Oklahoma City, OK), Chicago State University, (Chicago, IL),  Bay Ridge Christian College( Kendleton, TX), Wesley Bible College (Florence, MS) and Wesley Biblical Theological Seminary (Jackson, MS). He currently serves as instructor at Mid-America Christian University (Oklahoma City, OK).

Over the years Dr. Lewis has been active in community affairs and has served as President of the Mahattan-Junction City, KS NAACP; a Charter member and Vice Chairman of the Christian Counseling Center of Madison County, Anderson, IN; Chairman of the Fourth Police District Chicago Youthnet of Chicago, Illinois and Chairman of the Chicago Area Ministers and Laymen Fellowship; He was also a member and secretary of the Credentials Board of the Church of God in Illinois; member and Vice-Chair  of the Credentials Committee of the Church of God in Mississippi. 

He served as Chairman of the Committee on the Black Family for the National Council of Churches, New York City from 1978-1985 and Chairman/Vice Chairman of the Ministerial Assembly of the Church of God in Mississippi.

Dr. Lewis is president and one of the founding members of the “I  Wanna Be Institute” a program to help children, youth and young adults discover career  paths in the fields of education, medicine, law, engineering, allied trades and other professional careers.

Dr. Lewis is a national and international speaker and has served the Christian community throughout the United States and Canada as well as the Caribbean, Europe and Kenya, East Africa as a preacher, consultant, conference/seminar and workshop leader.

Dr. Lewis is the author of  Strategies for Teaching African American Adults (Urban Ministres, 2006) and Older Adult Ministry and Resource Manual, (National Board of Christian Education of the Church of God,  1990 and 2005).  He has also written more than 200 articles for various magazines and journals on family life, marital relations, conflict management, leadership and senior adults.

Dr. Lewis has credentials in marriage and family life education and holds several certifications as a family life specialist in marriage enrichment, leadership training and family relations seminars.  His special gift is working to strengthen families by helping them to develop their skills and to enrich their lives. His goal is to minister to the total family through inspired preaching, teaching and counseling. Pastor Lewis retired from Central Community Church of God in 2009 after serving for 10 years as senior pastor.
